Hebron School is currently working on two projects in the state of Orissa (India). 1. “ACTS” This is a fundraising project and we may possibly take a team to this site in the future. 2. “Orissa 2007” We have a team of 27 students and staff who will work in a village in June 2007. Please read information about each project below and direct any enquires to The Principal, Hebron School (Mr. Alastair Reid, +91 423 2442372, principal@hebronooty.org). 1. “ACTS” Project: In June 2004 Hebron School sent a team of students, alumni and staff to work with “ACTS” (Action Community Transformation Service) in Orissa (India). The team raised over INR 300,000 (~£3,700) and was involved in building work including a community centre. The roof of the centre is not sufficient and needs regular repair work done. Our aim is to raise INR 400,000 (~£4,900) to build a permanent roof structure. This roof building would be done by local professionals. Outcomes: A good roof on this building will enable the children, about 100 in the age group of 3-12 years from three villages, to use the centre for creative learning, worship, personality development, regular parent–children interaction, and seeing a different world view with the help of teachers, visitors, preachers and educational media. This would also serve as a dwelling place for the workers employed by ACTS without getting wet during the monsoon season. It will also be a place where the Church can hold it’s meetings on a regular basis. A small portion of this centre will also be used as a field office for ACTS. Funds: Students from Hebron School organized a sponsored triathlon which was the first fund-raising event for this project. Thank you to all those who sponsored the teams. This event raised INR240,000 (~£2,942). We are also seeking donations and will be looking at organsing other fund-raising events. 2. “Orissa 2007” Project: In June 2006 Hebron School sent a team of students and staff to work with Nehemiah Ministries in Orissa (India). The team was involved in field work (preparing 3 acres of land for cultivation), building a bathroom, white washing the interior of a building and other work to prepare the site for a children’s home. Another team is preparing to return to this site in June 2007. This team will prepare another section of land for cultivation, build a community centre nearby and assist with children’s work and a health clinic. Outcomes: 1) Medical Camp- The rural population in Orissa do not have access to any basic medical facilities, the camp will create a basic awareness in health , hygiene , prevention of communicable diseases etc. 2) Agriculture – The recently purchased land needs to be pre-prepared for cultivation. When it is ready the following vegetables can be cultivated, tomatoes, potatoes brinjal, cabbage, radish, greens, beans etc. This will enable the home boys to have fresh healthy vegetables. 3) The boys in the home are mostly isolated from the rest of the world , the visit of the Hebron team will create an opportunity for the boys to interact with the diverse heron team, Play with them , learn new songs , games, and learn a bit of basic English. This is the most anticipated event of the year 4) Social gatherings and worship services normally happen under a mango tree. During the monsoon season there is no opportunity whatsoever for the people in this part of Orissa to gather. The proposed building for a community hall will greatly help the people to meet for worship and for any other formal or informal occasions without any disruptions 5) The boys in the Home do not have any tables or chairs to facilitate their study. The proposed plan by the Hebron team to make tables and chairs will give a new lease of life to their study time. Funds: Nehemiah Ministries will provide the necessary funds for this project. Please note that Hebron School’s Student Council has raised money for Nehemiah Ministries’ work in this area.
