First quarter (August-October) Unit 9A - Inheritance and selection
Types of variation, effects of genes and environment, Mitosis and Meiosis,
sex determination, Gregor Mendel and a simple monohybrid cross, selective
breeding and genetic modification.
Second Quarter (October-December) Unit 9C – Plants and Photosynthesis
How plants grow, including experiments to deduce the photosynthesis equation,
the role of the leaf and how the plant uses the glucose produced.
Third Quarter (February-April) Unit 9B – Fit and Healthy
Indicators of a fit body, the functioning of the Respiratory System and
the effect of smoking; a healthy diet and the effect of alcohol and drug
abuse; the bones, muscles and joints and correct exercise.
Fourth quarter (April- June) Unit 9D – Plants for Food
Food chains and webs, fertilizers, competition for resources, pest control,
pesticides, ideal growing conditions, modern farming.

Pupils start to study the IGCSE syllabus from CIE number 0610.
We broadly follow the order in the syllabus: |

Term 1 August –December: The Cell and Organisation, Classification,
Movement across cell membranes, enzymes, plant nutrition, animal nutrition.
Term 2 February – June: Plant transport, animal transport, respiration,
excretion and homeostasis.

Pupils complete the study of the IGCSE syllabus and take the exam
in May. They sit the Alternative to Practical paper. |

Term 1 August- December: Coordination and response, Reproduction in plants
and in humans, growth and development, inheritance.
Term 2 February – June: Variation and selection, Ecology, human influences
on the ecosystem, revision and exam.

Cambridge CIE syllabus 9700 to Advanced Subsidiary Level (AS)
The exam in May includes two theory papers and a practical exam. |

Topics include: Cell Structure, Biological Molecules, Enzymes, Cell
membranes and Transport, Cell and Nuclear Division, Genetic Control,
Transport, Gas Exchange, Infectious Disease, Immunity and Ecology.
We have a three day Ecology Field trip to Mandapam in February. |

Cambridge CIE syllabus 9700 to Advanced Level (A2) |

The exam in May includes one main theory paper and a paper
testing planning, analysis and evaluation skills.
Topics include: Respiration, Photosynthesis, Regulation and Control,
Inheritance, Selection and Evolution, Biodiversity and Conservation, Biotechnology,
Crop Plants and Human Reproduction. |
