HEBRON SCHOOL

ESL Senior School

We do not subscribe to the philosophy that if students are placed in a class and dormitory where English is the common language, they will automatically pick it up, for a variety of reasons. Language is taught, not caught. “Research shows that children take up to two years to develop basic interpersonal skills, BUT it takes from five to seven years to acquire the full range of inter-personal skills of IGCSE” ( Assessing the Needs of Bi-lingual Pupils. D. Hall).

Students follow the Cambridge English in Schools (CES) programme where all topics
are related to the English National Curriculum.

  Programme includes:
Std. 10 Students work on a range of language adequate for communication studying from Book 4. The language focus is on the use of present perfect continuous and passive tenses and modals for probability.
Topics in Std 10 are linked with science, social and cultural studies, personal and social education, moral education and study skills.
Students in Std 10 work towards the Senior English Test (SET) Level 1 exams.
  Senior English Test Level One
The students should be able to cope linguistically in a range of everyday situations that require a predictable use of language. They should be able to ask questions for clarification and write a straightforward letter and understand parts of a discussion on predictable matters.
Std. 11

Students continue to follow a variety of programmes aimed at preparing them for and supporting them with their IGCSE examinations.

Students in Std 11 work towards the Senior English Test (SET) Level 2 exams.

Senior English Test Level Two
This is equivalent to the Cambridge FCE level. The students should be able to handle the main structures of the language with some confidence and demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of vocabulary. They should produce written texts of various types showing ability to develop an argument and describe or recount events. This test is suitable for children between 15-16 years.

Alternatively they may sit for the Cambridge First Certificate in English (F.C.E.)
This is widely recognised in Commerce and Industry and by Educational Institutions in Britain and Overseas as proof of language ability at an Intermediate stage. There are components in Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Use of English

Std. 12 - 13

There are other examinations available for students in the A level programme should they prove valuable as qualifications to enhance placement in universities around the world.

Certificate In Advanced English (C.A.E.) Is suitable for students who require English for professional or study purposes. It is recognised by the majority of British Universities for English Languages.

Certificate of Proficiency in English (C.P.E) An advanced level recognised as an entrance requirement by British Universities and for business and academic purposes overseas.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (T.O.E.F.L)
