In the Junior School we follow the English National Curriculum,
but with some modifications and additions, taking into account our
location and international profile. In this overview, it is not possible
to state all that is covered in each year in each subject, but we have
tried to give just a sample of the kind of work that goes on in each
year group, to give an idea of the different levels. |

Numeracy |
| |
In this curriculum, there are many different aspects covered. The main
ones include;- counting, properties of numbers, and number sequences; place
value, ordering, estimating and rounding numbers; developing mental calculation
strategies, making decisions and checking results; measures work, including
time, mass, length, area, capacity, money, and related problem solving;
shape and space, and reasoning about them; data handling. |
| Reception |
Children learn to count, recognize numerals, and use
them in a variety of contexts, songs and rhymes. They begin to recognize
shapes and use vocabulary related to different measures.
|
| |
|
| Std 1 |
Children begin to understand the properties of numbers and order
them. They will estimate and count, and begin to understand the operations
of addition and subtraction. |
| |
|
| Std 2 |
Children will learn about place value and understand what
each digit represents. They will begin to reason and explain their answers.
They will begin to understand about multiplication and division, and
be able to describe 2D and 3D shapes. |
| |
|
| Std 3 |
Mental math’s abilities are developed as well as
addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers, using regrouping and bridging.
More work is done on the understanding of multiplication and division,
and the application of basic concepts to problem-solving. |
| |
|
| Std 4 |
Oral and mental math strategies are developed with rapid
recall of facts. Being able to read numbers from scales, and solving
problems with money are covered, and children are introduced to fractions
and decimal
work. |
| |
|
| Std 5 |
Children get into large numbers at this level, and work
on rounding to two decimal places. They relate fractions to decimals
and division and look at positive and negative numbers. Understanding
area measurement
and use three-digit numbers in multiplication and division. |
| |
|
| Std 6 |
Work is developed in the four main areas of using numbers
i.e. addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, learning how
to apply this knowledge to ‘real life’ problems. They will cover
the areas of Data handling in using the skills of interpreting and producing
graphs, charts, and tables. Shape and Space looks at 2D and 3D shapes,
angles and movement. |
