LEAVERS/STAYERS CRICKET MATCH

Date: 19th and 20th May 2005

Venue: Big Pitch

The leavers’ captain Matthew Thomson won the toss and chose to field.

Mr. Graham and Jonathan Reid opened the batting and got off to a slow but steady start having a partnership of 90 runs before Mr. Graham’s retirement. Josiah Hall bowled well once more, bringing his pace and bounce from the Blue-Gold match a few weeks ago into this game. Nishant was a bit wayward but caused a few problems as Jonny picked up singles and Mr. Graham quickly got into stride with some ‘streaky’ fours. He soon retired having scored 30 to allow for Matt Hivner, who had looked in great form in the nets, to have a bat. By now, it was more of a ‘swing’ than anything else as the leavers’ medium-pace was flayed to all parts of the ground. Jonny scored a few well timed shots on the leg-side before holing-out in the deep to a well-taken catch by Josiah Hall for 42. Matt was soon bowled by a straight bowl from Abhishek Aghamkar and Sammy Thangiah soon followed for 13 having played some nice cut shots. Mr. Bradshaw and Deepak then played out the remaining overs comfortably as the Stayers’ team ended on 173/3 after 16 overs (8-ball). The bowling performance was commendable considering only two players on the team had played for the school this term but extras still came out as the top-scorer with 61!

On a hot afternoon the teams came to play the conclusion of the match. Raphael Rayees opened the bowling and bowled with good pace and bounce and soon dismissed Nishant off a well placed bouncer. Mr. Roberts batted solidly as Mr. ‘the bullet’ John raced in with slightly less fire-power than usual off a shortened run-up. Matt Thomson played some fine strokes before he was unlucky to be run-out from an accurate throw from Abhishek Singh. Mr. Roberts was soon out after some accurate bowling from Mr. Erkilla led to a good catch from Mr. Newton (WK). Chandan and Vinay then had a 56 run partnership with some sublime hitting before Chandan was caught off the bowling of Jonny on the third attempt by Mr. John, for 33. Marayan then came in and scored some good singles before receiving a welcoming bouncer from Jonny that struck him on the head. This blow obviously affected him somewhat as he was bowled, middle-stump, next ball. Vinay was then well stumped off the bowling of Sammy who also got Abhishek Aghamkar out last bowl of the game with another middle-stump wicket.

The Stayers thus won the game by 37 runs.
