Independence Day 2007

This year’s Indian Independence Day was especially noteworthy.  August 15th 2007 marked the 60th anniversary of India’s independence from Britain as well as the 150th anniversary of the Indian Mutiny / First War of Independence.

Our Guest of Honour this year was a close friend of the school – Colonel Wright (retd.).  Colonel and Mrs. Wright often attend our plays and concerts and they have served many schools and charities in the Nilgiris over the past 30+ years. After the traditional flag hoisting and singing of the National Anthem, we held a special Assembly.

At this function a short piece of archive film was shown about the granting of Independence in 1947.  The Std. 11 girls put on a display concerning women’s rights in India.  A hymn was sung and prayers said.  Colonel Wright then gave an interesting and challenging talk about the opportunities facing India today.

During the rest of the day the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme ran training sessions on First Aid and camp craft whilst several Dorms had special activities.  In the evening, on both campuses, the whole school watched David Attenborough’s “Ghandi” – the Oscar winning film about the life of the Mahatma.  This was a fitting conclusion to an important day in the life of this country.
