Student Leadership |
Students are encouraged to develop in a variety of leadership rôles whilst they are at school. Whilst many opportunities emerge as students reach the top of the school, there are also situations where younger students can take a lead. These include being Student Council class representatives (Standard 7 upwards), sports’ captains of junior teams and representation on bodies such as the school newspaper editorial team. Older students, especially in the two ‘A’ level years, may be elected to the Student Council executive [link here to Student Council part of website?], take on the captaincy of a particular sport, be a House Sports’ Captain, organize a club or activity, lead a Christian activity or publication, produce a play, lead an orchestra or become a School Prefect. For all these tasks there is an element of training. Some of this is done formally – such as for House Captains and School Prefects – and some is more informal as an outgoing leader hands over his/her post to an incoming student. For the first time in 2004-5 there was a formal leadership training weekend for all Standard 12 students. This will be repeated in subsequent years. The highest levels of student leadership can be found in Student Council, an elected body, and in the School Prefects’ body. The latter are appointed by the Senior Management, after much prayer and discussion, involving out-going Prefects and the staff. Prefects help with the administration of routine matters – such as Assemblies and meal times – but also assist Dorm Parents of the younger Dorms with sport, activities and boarding routines. They have a special Prefects’ Retreat in April each year, usually at the remote Avalanche Scripture Union Outdoor centre, where team-building exercises, command tasks and formal leadership instruction is given. PREFECTS FOR 2008 - 9: Girls: Rachael Bordon, Irina de Saint Ours, Kerstin Kestner, Eun Jin Lee, Lisa Mitchell, Gitanjali Pillai, Tais Renzetti, Mariyam Saviour, Salome Udaiyar Boys: Anand Divakaran, Sumith Dutta, Jason Gokavi, Dong Ok Kim, Thomas Leonard, Luke Richardson, Joshua Rex, Yash Verma, Daniel Wansong HOUSE CAPTAINS FOR 2007-8:
From the start of the August 2006 term, all members of Std. 13 have been given a special area of responsibility. This equates to an area of their interest and also to an area of service need in the school.
It is our aim at Hebron to give as many students as possible the opportunity to experience leadership situations so that they will be well-equipped for when they leave school. Above all, our objective is to encourage students ‘not to be served, but to serve’.
