Principal's Message- December 2022

Dear friends,

Christmas greetings from Hebron!

At our school carol service, we were treated to an original and creative re-telling of the story of the Magi, entitled ‘Wise Women of the East’ and written by one of our members of staff, Sayanora Sathyadass. This reminded us of the good news that Jesus’ birth heralds for all people and nations.

We also enjoyed a number of other Christmas celebrations at the end of this term – with the many and varied talents of the Music department and their students providing the musical accompaniment throughout. The Junior School nativity, entitled “The Never-ending Love Story”, skillfully showed us the whole sweep of the biblical story; all the students spoke and sang with impressive clarity and confidence, which was a testimony to the hard work of Miss Coombs and all the Junior School staff.

The acting and singing at the staff pantomime were of varying quality, but the performances were enjoyed by staff and students alike! The busy and bustling Christmas Fair gave us a chance to buy presents for family and friends while supporting several charities and social enterprises.

In a Sports Hall transformed by clever lighting and decorations, we enjoyed a sumptuous Christmas dinner together, courtesy of Mr Dominic and our amazing catering team. At this dinner, and also at a special event for staff a few days earlier, we said farewell to our leaving staff and IGs. These were particularly notable events as we were expressing our thanks to three long-serving staff who are retiring at the end of this term, after over 80 years of combined service to the school– Marie Rodricks, Sushila Marshal, and A. Prabhu. We heard many testimonies of their immense contribution to Hebron, from staff members present and past (via videos and messages). In Rebecca Klumpenhouwer, as Principal’s Secretary, Sharon Selvaraj, in the Admissions Office, and Peter Lazarus, as PRO, we have some fine and gifted people taking over from Marie, Sushila, and Prabhu, but we know that these three have all left an indelible mark on Hebron, and on the lives of so many staff, students and parents); we wish them every blessing for their next steps.

Early in December, we had perfect weather for the school cross-country event. We have introduced three courses, 3km, 5km, and 7km, which follow the traditional route with some necessary tweaks. Students can choose which race to run, giving themselves an appropriate level of the challenge after their training over the course of the term. This meant that, along with some competitive races for the podium positions, there was a strong spirit of positive participation from all. We hope that this will help to foster a life-long enjoyment of sport and exercise. There are also 2km and 1km courses for the younger students and their determination was an inspiration!

Also on the sporting front, our under-19 boys' basketball team triumphed in the inter-school basketball competition, with a dominant performance against Laidlaw in the final, held at Good Shepherd. Added to our victory in the under-19 football tournament, as well as victories and fine performances in other sports such as tennis and badminton, it has been a successful return to inter-school sport for Hebron.

In April 2023, we are planning to publish a book of recipes from the Hebron community. As a taster for this, we have compiled a small booklet of Christmas recipes which is attached as a gift to you all, with thanks for your continued support and prayers for the school.

I hope that you have an enjoyable holiday and may our Lord, the greatest gift of all, bring you peace and joy during this festive season, and in the new year ahead.
