Student Leadership

As Nelson Mandela said, “the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow” and at Hebron there are many opportunities for students to develop leadership skills

Our prefects in Standard 13 play a vital role in supporting the work of the dorm parents, helping to mentor and care for our younger students. They also help to supervise students at meal-times and break-times. Meeting weekly with the Principal, they are a ‘bridge’ between students and staff.

Our Student Council team, elected by the students, also allows students to develop a range of skills as they plan whole-school events, run the student canteen and organise fund-raising activities. In other areas, such as in sports, drama and music, students are able to captain teams, direct plays and lead ensembles and bands. Students also play a key role, under staff guidance, in leading many of our Christian activities, such as the Youth Fellowship and Prayer Breakfast. We want  our students to learn to take responsibility, to show initiative and to work well within a team, whatever their role.

We know that for many students, these opportunities are a formative experience that is one of the most important aspects of their time at Hebron.

Throughout the school, the system of class representatives encourages students to use their voice and to participate actively in shaping the life of the community. We ensure that our student leaders receive safeguarding training so that they can work with our staff to ensure the safety of all our students. This is part of a leadership training weekend in Standard 12 that aims to equip  our student leaders for their different roles. For our prefects, we join with several schools in the UK for online training in team-building and leadership for student leaders. This is organised by TISCA (The Independent Schools Christian Alliance) and the 2022 event was hosted by Monkton Coombe school near Bath.

We know that for many students, these opportunities are a formative experience that is one of the most important aspects of their time at Hebron.
